Calendars & Wallets Don’t Lie
Years ago, I attended a conference where a speaker said, “Calendars and wallets don’t lie. Show me how someone spends their time and money, and I’ll show you what is important to them.”
That comment has stuck with me since then. How we spend our time and our resources matters.
The quote was in reference to personal finance, but it can apply to nearly any aspect of our lives: work/life balance, family and friends, wants and needs, health and fitness, faith, etc.
When we align our time and wallet resources with the people, places, things, and ideas that are most important to us, real progress is made!
When they are not in alignment, stress (and worse) is a common outcome.
To be intentional about how to spend time and resources, here are a few steps to start and things to ponder:
Spend time deciding the ideal way you would allocate your resources.
Evaluate the current state of how resources are allocated.
Identify any gaps. Are there any surprises? Is there something that can be easily changed without a lot of effort?
Think in terms of short, mid, and long-term goals.
Are there certain things that would be cost-effective to delegate that cause tension?
Are there times of year, or certain upcoming years that will demand more time or resources? Is there a way to prepare for them now?
How will you evaluate the effectiveness of changes going forward?
Financial planning is more than just the numbers. The numbers need to serve you. The process can help you align your calendar and wallet!
